Why Enterprises May Need to Configure Email Permissions

When using third-party tools like Forward to send emails through corporate email accounts (e.g., Microsoft Outlook), additional setup may be required due to organizational security policies. Enterprise systems often block access by default to ensure only trusted apps can access company data. In such cases, IT administrators must grant specific permissions to allow the integration to function properly.

How to Enable the Forward App for Microsoft Outlook

To send emails from your Microsoft email address via Forward, your Microsoft 365 administrator may need to allow the necessary permissions. Below are two ways to configure your Azure Active Directory settings.

Method 1: Allow All Apps (Recommended for Simpler Setups)

  1. Sign in to the Azure Portal

  2. Navigate to the Enterprise Applications page.

  3. From the left menu, go to Security > Consent and permissions.

  4. Under the User Consent Settings tab, select Allow user consent for apps and click Save to apply the changes.

Method 2: Allow Selected Permissions from Verified Publishers

If your company has strict security policies and cannot allow all apps, follow this alternative method:

  1. Go to User Settings.

  2. Enable the option: Allow user consent for apps from verified publishers, for selected permissions.

Refer to the example screenshot below.

⚠️ Note: This setting alone is not enough. You also need to add specific permissions that Forward requires.

Required Permissions for Forward to Work with Outlook

  • User.Read

  • email

  • openid

  • profile

  • offline_access

  • Mail.Send

Among these, all except Mail.Send are basic permissions. However, for Forward to send emails on your behalf via your Outlook account, the Mail.Send permission is mandatory.

Steps to Add Permissions:

  1. Go to the Permission Classifications page.

  2. Click the + Add permissions button.
